Coast to Coast WordCamps: Providence & Vancouver
This weekend, 10up is sponsoring WordCamps on both North American coasts, as WordCamp Providence and WordCamp Vancouver host their annual conference. 10uppers are also busy preparing to play their part at both camps.
As an organizer for WordCamp Providence – an outgrowth of my organizer role at our local meet up – I have the honor of delivering opening remarks for Friday’s sessions and closing remarks for the entire camp on Saturday. Providence is close to our team’s heart. Our President started the meet up here back in 2010, and lived here for over 10 years. John Jacoby, our new Director of Web Engineering, lived in the city for two years, from late 2010 to early 2013, and helped organize last year’s WordCamp. Jess Jurick, Director of Web Strategy, started her career at 10up while living here. We couldn’t help but step up with a top-level, Anchor Sponsorship. The camp has a great line up, including a number of 10uppers.
WordCamp Providence: Birth Place of 10up
This weekend 10up is sponsoring the first ever WordCamp Providence as a top-level Anchor Sponsor!
This is a special camp for us, since 10up started in Rhode Island. Jake also started the WordPress Providence Meetup group, which Luke now leads, that became the foundation and organizing team for this WordCamp.
Jess Jurick, one of our Senior Web Strategists, will be speaking on Writing Tools for WordPress, reviewing offline and online tools to help you brainstorm topics for your blog, produce great content for your audience, and distribute that content to your online communities. Much to his disappointment, Jake can’t make the camp due to a personal conflict in his schedule, but he promises to be with us in spirit!
Join us at WordCamp NYC 2012
I am excited to announce that Jake, Helen, and I will be speaking at WordCamp NYC 2012 – which we’re also sponsoring – on June 9-10. This will be my first time to speak at a WordCamp. Jake and Helen are old pros.
In Jake’s presentation, he will be asking: “What would core do?”, and challenging you to keep asking yourself the same as you add your themes and plugins to WordPress. He will show you how to extend core “with class and consistency”.
Helen will be talking about: “Making Plugins and Themes Disappear into the WordPress Admin. One of the best things about WordPress is its beautiful admin UI.” Helen suggests, “We should take advantage of what is built-in and also strive to have our additions look as though they are native.”
I will be talking about: Actions and Filters in Core JavaScript. As JavaScript becomes an ever more important part of the WordPress admin, knowing how to use these JavaScript hooks will become as essential as knowing PHP hooks.
If you are in the New York area, come see us. We would look forward to meeting you (or seeing you again).
